A week after claiming his second top-five finish of the season, James Sugrue is again the leading Irishman on day one of the Clutch Pro Tour’s Motocaddy Masters at St Mellion Golf Club in Cornwall.

The Mallow man carded an opening round of 70 to move into a share of 13th place on a day where just 28 players broke par but the leader posted an incredible nine-under-par.

Sugrue birdied two of his first seven holes, but found himself back at level-par for the day with three to go after trading three bogeys and a birdie in the next eight. A pair of back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17 and a closing par helped shoot him back up the leaderboard and give him a good chance at continuing his impressive start to the 2025 campaign.

At level-par sits Tyler Hogarty, who plies his trade at the host venue, with Niall Kearney, making his first Clutch Pro appearance of the year, one further adrift at +1 and sharing 40th place, just the right side of the provisional cut mark.

Just the other side of the line is Tom Dowdall on +2, with John Ross Galbraith and Noel Murray on +3, Paul McBride on +4 and Scott Montgomery on +6.

Marc Boucher, Conor Murtagh, and Brandon St John (+6), Robert Brazill (+7), and Rory Williamson (+8) all have their work cut out to see final-round action, while amateurs David Howard and Johnny Napier likely have too much to do to extend their weeks any further than two rounds.

But while many were struggling, England’s David Hague was making it look easy, carding nine birdies in a bogey-free effort to take a two-stroke advantage over fellow countryman Giles Evans, with Joe Brooks completing the leading trio one shot further in arrears at -6.
