James Sugrue finds himself in a six-way share of the lead on day one of the Clutch Pro Tour’s Tangier Championship at Heythrop Park in England after opening with a six-under 65.
The former Amateur Championship winner got off to a mixed start with a birdie on one followed by a bogey on two, but that would be the Cork native’s only dropped shot of the day and an eagle on the fourth put him back in good stead.
Further birdies followed on eight, 10, 12 and 15 and he joins Canadian Callum Davidson and four Englishmen in Callum Farr, Thomas Thurloway, Jordan Wrisdale and William Harrold at the head of affairs.
Whitehead’s John Ross Galbraith is next best of the seven Irish in a tie for eighth at -4 having gone four-under on his final nine holes, and he, like Sugrue, will have the benefit of an early tee time and fresh greens on day two.
Rory Williamson and Paul McBride sit side by side sharing 33rd place on two-under, with Robert Brazill two shots further back and two shots shy of the provisional cut mark.
Marc Boucher has a lot of work to do if he’s to find himself in action on the final day as he’s a further two shots behind and four off the mark, while Scott Montgomery’s week is likely to come to a premature end after opening with a seven-over 78.
