Rory McIlroy is being backed to pull off a historic calendar-year Grand Slam as he prepares to tee it up at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow on Thursday as the 4/1 joint favourite with BoyleSports.

The North Carolina track holds fond memories for the Masters champion as it has hosted four of his multiple career victories and he will hit the course at the same price as World Number 1 Scottie Scheffler, who boosted his credentials with his first victory of the year at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson this month.

But McIlroy fans are looking beyond this week’s event after his victory at Augusta completed a career Grand Slam and added a fifth major title to the Holywood man’s resumé. Odds of 50/1 are being snapped up on a McIlroy major clean sweep this year, which could potentially culminate in a heroic home soil victory when The Open heads to Royal Portrush in July.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “Quail Hollow has been very kind to Rory McIlroy and now that his love affair with the majors is back on, punters are eyeing up a season for the ages.”

While the top two in the world rankings are dominating the betting for the PGA Championship, Bryson DeChambeau is a popular alternative at 15/2 to bag the second major of the season, while in-form Justin Thomas has been clipped into 16/1 from 20/1 to lift the trophy at the same track he was crowned PGA Champion in 2017.

Support for Shane Lowry to double his major tally is also on the rise following his near miss at the Truist Championship last week, with a move into 30/1 from 35/1 signalling confidence of a strong Irish challenge.
