Liam Grehan has booked his place in the Sunshine Tour’s Kit Kat Cash & Carry Pro-Am by birdieing the first playoff hole in the pre-tournament qualifier at Irene Country Club in Johannesburg’s this morning.
The Sunshine Tour rookie has Category Nine status after finishing 12th at Q-School last month, but it wasn’t enough to gain direct access to the limited field Pro-Am but it may prove to be a blessing in disguise as he’s now had a competitive round on the course before taking his place in the main field.
Starting on the 10th, the K Club man got off to a flying start with back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11 and then followed with another brace on 13 and 14. A bogey on 15 stalled the momentum a little, but he made his way back to -4 with a birdie on 18 before turning for home.
He found the going a little tougher on the front side, with his only birdie coming on the second and it was sandwiched by two bogeys, but he played the final six in level-par to record a three-under tally that was enough to earn a share of fifth place, meaning he’d be part of a 10-man playoff vying for the six final spots.
And it wasn’t long before he’d completed the task, sinking a birdie putt on the first hole to advance while the other players fought it out for the remaining spots.
He’ll now compete for a 2,000,000 rand prizefund (€98,000) alongside a number of DP World and PGA Tour winners, including Dylan Fritelli and former LIV player Kieran Vincent.
