Shane Lowry cast a distraught figure as he swept in a two-foot bogey putt on the 72nd hole of the PGA Tour’s Truist Championship. He knew he’d just made Sepp Straka’s task a simple one and wasn’t thinking of the financial implications, but they were there nonetheless.
By bogeying the final hole, Lowry fell into a two-way tie for second alongside Justin Thomas and lost $400,000 in the process. It was still a lucrative week and along with breaking into the top 10 in the OWGR for the first time ever, the Offalyman pocketed $1.76 million, taking his season’s earnings on the PGA Tour to $5,743,758 and to $28,969,517 in career money.
Straka collected the top prize of $3.6 million and took a big step towards European Ryder Cup qualification in the process.
Rory McIlroy added $602,500 to his bank balance and brought his season’s earnings on the PGA Tour to $13,929,150, but despite the vast sums of money on offer, it was more about tuning up for this week’s US PGA Championship at his beloved Quail Hollow for the reigning Masters champion.
Meanwhile, Séamus Power’s week didn’t materialise quite the way it had promised after an opening round of -7 at the Opposite Field PGA Tour event in Myrtle Beach, but the Waterford man still earned $21,800 for his T34 finish.
