Hugh Foley is three shots off the lead in a tie for second going into the final round of the Alps Tour’s Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon at La Pinetina Golf Club in Como, Italy.
The Royal Dublin man fired a blistering eight-under 62 to surge up the leaderboard and the round began in perfect fashion when he recorded an eagle-three on the 10th – his first hole – and though he’d drop a shot on 12, he bounced back with two more birdies to make the turn at -3.
He kept the foot down on the front side, adding birdies on three, four, six, eight and nine to come home in 31 and move to -11 overall.
“I putted really well today,” he said. “To shoot 62, you must roll it great on the greens, and that was the key for me. I also hit it straight off the tee, which gave me plenty of chances. On this course, you’ve got to keep it out of the trees and it’s not a long layout, so if you’re accurate, you’re hitting short irons in and giving yourself a lot of birdie looks.”
Foley’s best finish to date on the Alps Tour was a tie for third at the New Giza Open in Egypt back in March, and he’ll be hoping to put pressure on leader Asier Aguirre Izcue with whom he’ll be paired on the final day.
“This is the first time I’ve been in the final pairing, so I’m really excited about that. I just want to enjoy the experience, stick to the same game plan, and hopefully hole as many putts as I did today,” he added.
Joining them in the final trio will be Italian Marco Florioli, with France’s Victor Veryet, Spain’s Javier Barcos and Mason Essam of England each at -10 and forming the penultimate threeball.
Ronan Mullarney sits tied for 17th after a four-under 66 that moved him to -5, with Robert Moran one further adrift at -4, while Michael Young and John Murphy both missed the cut.
