Liam Grehan got his 2025 Sunshine Tour campaign off to a promising start as he topped the standings at the pre qualifier for the FBC Zimbabwe Open at Royal Harare Golf Club.

Grehan carded a two-under 70 to win by a shot over South African duo David Meyers and Tyrone Davidowitz and local player Braydon Amm.

Grehan secured his Sunshine Tour card at Q-School last month alongside his friend Rowan Lester and although the pair plan to move to Johannesburg for the upcoming season the Mullingar man will be representing Ireland despite the South African flag beside his name.

Grehan who was based in the K Club as a PGA Professional views the Sunshine Tour as a better route to forge his touring career compared to some of the European based mini tours.

“Me and Rowan were spending over a grand playing Clutch Tour, where as the entry is a fiver here for Sunshine and the entry for Clutch was €550,” said Grehan.

“Five hundred and fifty five euro breaks your heart, you’re already 12 grand in the hole before you’ve already played well before anything else with just entry fees.

“A one hundred grand pot on Sunshine compared to 50 grand on Clutch makes the world of difference.”

Lester was already guaranteed his place in the field via finishing in the top-5 at qualifying school and is looking forward to getting his season underway and enjoying the adventure with Grehan.

“I personally wouldn’t come down here on my own so having Liam here helps a lot, being able to go for dinner a lot and having someone you know and can trust is huge. It’s too much of a change to do it on your own, it’s easier with a couple of lads,” the Hermitage golfer said.
