Sara Byrne has work to do to make the 36-hole cut after carding an opening two-over 74 on day one of the Epson Tour’s Reliance Matrix Championship at Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas.

The Cork woman, playing out of Dromoland Castle, made just six pars on the day, making six birdies but also carding four bogeys and two doubles. This leaves her tied for 81st on +2, two strokes shy of the provisional cutline which sees the leading 65 and ties advance to Sunday’s final round.

She will have the advantage of an early tee time on day two, however, as she’s scheduled to go off in the second group off the first tee, meaning freshly rolled greens and a slightly softer golf course than that which the late starters will face in Las Vegas’ soaring heat.

It’s been a difficult start to her maiden Epson campaign as she goes in search of an LPGA card via the same path that Leona Maguire took, missing the cut in two of her four starts and with a best finish of just T28.

But there are still 14 events remaining before the Epson Tour Championship in October, and she’ll enjoy a healthy schedule as she mixes starts on the LET with starts on the Epson Tour.

A pair of Amelias lead the way, with Amelia Garvey of New Zealand and Amelia Williamson of England sharing first-round leader honours after rounds of 65 for -7 tallies, with a further three players in hot pursuit at -6.
