With the major success stories Irish golfers – Rory McIlroy in particular – have generated in recent weeks, more big payouts were promised with McIlroy and Lowry defending the Zurich Classic, Tom McKibbin and Graeme McDowell in LIV action in Mexico, Leona Maguire playing the first major of the women’s season in Texas, and Conor Purcell looking to follow up his best result of the season as the DP World Tour remained in China.
And it was McKibbin who emerged as the biggest financial winner of the week despite a T34 finish at Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico City. $146,500 was the reward for that, but his Legion XIII side claimed their second team victory of the season and this was worth a further $300,000 to the Holywood man.
Graeme McDowell’s second top-20 finish of the year (T17) saw the Portrush man collect $255,000, while Joaquin Niemann took home the top prize of $4 million with an additional $50k added for finishing third in the team standings.
McIlroy and Shane Lowry came to New Orleans as the pre-tournament favourites as they hoped to defend their title, but it wasn’t to be and a few late bogeys saw them slip outside the top 10 and have to settle for $69,090 each for their week’s efforts as Andrew Novak and Ben Griffin each pocketed $1.3 million and change.
Conor Purcell’s two-week stint in China has proven most welcome for the Portmarnock man, who added €26,181 at the Hainan Classic to the €30,318 he banked the week prior.
It was a disappointing week for Leona Maguire who finished T67 at the Chevron Championship, but with one of the larger purses on offer, she still walks away with $16,820, while Japan’s Mao Saigo, who not only won her first LPGA major, but her first ever LPGA title and with it, $1.2 million in prizemoney.
