Rory McIlroy will be part of the main event at the Players Championship after he was grouped with Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele for the first two rounds at TPC Sawgrass.

McIlroy, a 2019 Players champion, moved to world number two last week while Scheffler is the current world number one and defending Players champion, a title he beat Schauffele to by a shot last year.

Schauffele went on to have the better summer of the trio, winning the PGA Championship and Open Championship as he ascended to world number two before being overtaken by McIlroy before the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Scheffler arrives at the PGA Tour’s flagship event looking to become the fist player to win for the third straight year but he is yet to win in 2025 after a freak Christmas dinner injury delayed the start to his season.

McIlroy has a mixed record at TPC Sawgrass. He will be making a 15th career start at The Players, where he has missed the cut six times but also posted four top-10s, including his win six years ago.

Ludvig Åberg, Hideki Matsuyama and former world No 1 Justin Thomas have also been announced in the only other featured group tee time to be released.
