Rory McIlroy’s TGL campaign couldn’t have gone much worse, with Boston Common losing all five matches and finishing rock bottom of the league table.
But as one of the league’s co-founders, the world number two still packs a lot of clout which makes it seem a little ill-advised for the New York Golf Club’s X account operator to poke fun at Rory on what is likely still a touchy subject.
It’s hard to imagine him seeing the funny side of the tweet which brought up McIlroy’s U.S. Open heartbreak at Pinehurst when he missed a short par putt on the opening hole of the Boston versus New York tie.

The general consensus among X users was that the post crossed the line, adding insult to the injury of failing to qualify for the playoff portion of the league he’d co-created, and some suggested that the X account operator had better get working on his or her resume.
McIlroy’s thoughts on the post are not yet known, but he says that he enjoyed the TGL experience even if the results didn’t match and he’s keen to make amends next year.
“I’d certainly want to run it back next year,” he said. “I really enjoyed competing with these guys. But yeah, the nice thing is that Keegan and I especially live very close to here, so we can hopefully pop in whenever we want and get a little bit of extra practice going into next year.
“I think that’s the cool thing about this, as well, is you’ve got the semifinals in a couple weeks’ time and then the final and then it’s gone for nine months. Hopefully by the time January rolls around again, people are excited to watch it.
“After the next few weeks, we’ll let the major championship season kick in and obviously have people be super interested in that, but January, February, March when there’s not a ton going on at nighttime, especially up in the northeast, I think it’s a fun thing for people to be able to sit down and watch on a Monday and Tuesday night.”
