Played four, won four! Shane Lowry and the Bay Golf Club’s fortunes couldn’t contrast further from Rory McIlroy and Boston Common, who lost three matches straight up and the fourth in overtime, leaving them rooted to the foot of the table.
There is still a path to the playoffs for Boston Common, however, and that required Bay Golf Club taking down Jupiter Links last night and they duly obliged as Lowry, Wyndham Clark and Min Woo Lee recorded a 6-3 win over Kevin Kisner, Tom Kim and Max Homa.
With Bay leading 2-1 approaching the ninth and final triple-play hole, Jupiter opted to throw a hammer when Clark found the rough off the tee and Tom Kim, playing from the fairway, knocked one up greenside.
But up stepped Min Woo Lee to play arguably the shot of the league thus far, hitting it to six feet from 258 yards in the rough and Bay tossed a hammer back, which when accepted, upped the value of the hole to three points. And Lowry made no mistake, sending Bay four points clear.
Jupiter would never get back within three, leaving them second-to-last in the table on two points, with New York Golf Club currently occupying the final playoff berth on three.
For McIlroy and co., they now must beat New York by five points to leapfrog them in next week’s final round, and hope that Jupiter Links lose to Atlanta Drive (or secure an overtime loss with less than two additional holes won in comparison to Boston).
It means that we’re guaranteed to have at least one of the league’s co-founders in McIlroy and Woods watching from the sidelines in the playoffs, and as New York are in the driving seat, it’s odds on that both won’t feature.
“It’s nice,” Lowry said after maintaining the 100% record. “Obviously the first thing you want to do is come in here and get off to a good start and get into the playoffs and give yourself a chance to win this thing. That was great.
“But we came here tonight and we really wanted to win and keep our winning streak going. You want to finish as high up as you can to get the best seed possible.
“Yeah, I thought we did a great job tonight. Obviously the crucial hole was the 9th and we came out on top, so that was pretty cool.”
