When it’s your day, it’s your day, and when Brian Campbell’s tee shot on the second playoff hole at the PGA Tour’s Mexico Open – a slice that was destined to go well out of bounds – ricocheted back into play, you kind of knew it was his.
31 years old, playing his 187th professional event and yet to get a victory to his name, it’s hard to begrudge him, but he still had to make birdie the old fashioned way with a layup and a pinpoint wedge on the par-5, and he did just that, piling the pressure on the 20-year-old South African prodigy Aldrich Potgieter who couldn’t respond.
The $1.26 million cheque that Campbell picked up was five times that of his entire PGA Tour earnings to that point, and now he’s got Signature Event exemptions for the rest of the season and the not-so-insignificant invitation from Augusta National in the post.
Potgieter, playing just his fourth PGA Tour event, now averages over $200,000 per event, almost what Campbell had made in his prior 27 starts combined.
On the LPGA circuit, American Angel Yin’s one-stroke victory in Thailand was just her second win on the premier women’s tour, but it was sponsor’s invitation Akie Iwai of Japan who provided much of the drama with a final-round, 11-under 61 that saw her come up one shy.
Leona Maguire’s slow start to the tournament cost her any chances of seriously contending over the weekend, and she has to settle for just over $10,000 for he tie for 33rd.
At the DP World Tour’s Magical Kenya Open, South African Jacques Kruyswijk secured his first tour victory with a two-shot win over England’s John Parry and collects over €400,000 to accompany. Parry, who already has a 2025 season win to his name after triumphing in Mauritius back in December, adds another €262,000 and change to his year’s earnings.
