Ronan Mullarney ran out of holes as a blistering final round run saw him finish in 2nd place at the Ein Bay Open, the opening event of the Alps Tour season.

Mullarney teed off five shots adrift of the lead but a round of 67 saw him set the clubhouse target on twelve-under which was eventually pipped by Switzerland’s Luca Galliano who made birdie at the par-5 17th.

Mullarney’s charge looked unlikely after a slow start saw him open with five successive pars and a bogey on the sixth. But two birdies in three holes gave him some much needed momentum heading into the back nine.

The Galway man put on a sprint to the finish line and rolled in back to back birdies on 12 and 13 before birdies on 15 and 17 briefly put him into the lead.

“I’m really happy with how I’ve started and pleased with my game,” he said. “My scores were fairly consistent over the three days. I had one bogey today on the sixth, but I bounced back with two birdies in the next three holes. On the back nine, I putted well and notched four birdies.”

Mullarney pockets €3,453 for his week’s work.

It was a good week overall for the Irish as debutant Hugh Foley posted a final round of 69 to grab a share of tenth place on nine-under with his former Irish International teammate Robert Moran two shots further back after a 70.

Kinsale’s John Murphy also finished a positive week with a round of 70 for 20th place on six-under.
