Rory McIlroy is optimistic that US President Donald Trump is on the PGA Tour’s side in efforts to secure a peace deal with PIF.
McIlroy played golf with Trump in January and also played the Genesis Invitational pro-am with Trump’s children Donald Jr and Kai on Tuesday before revealing that after having discussions with the President, he is not a fan of LIV Golf either.
“It was great. Yeah, it was really good, it was really good. I thought we had a good discussion. I learnt that he’s not a fan of the LIV format. I was like, but you’ve hosted their events. He was like, yeah, but it doesn’t mean that I like it. So I think he’s on the Tour’s side.
“The President, he can do a lot of things,” McIlroy added. “He has direct access to Yasir’s [PIF boss Al-Rumayyan] boss [Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman]. Not many people have that.
“Not many people can say, ‘I want you to get this deal done. And by the way, I’m speaking to your boss later, I’m going to tell him the same thing.’ So there’s a few things that he can do.”
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and player director Adam Scott met with Trump last week with Monahan stating that a deal was “closer” to being finalised.
Over the last seven days LIV Golf has been granted exemptions into this year’s US Open and Open Championship while it has also secured television broadcasting deals with Fox Spots in the US and ITV in the United Kingdom.
