Tiger Woods announced on Monday that he is “not ready” to compete this week and will withdraw from the Genesis Invitational, an event where he also serves as the tournament host.
On Tuesday of last week, Woods revealed the death of his mother, Kultida. Three days later, it was announced that Woods would participate in the Genesis Invitational.
However, he has now decided to withdraw.
“I planned to tee it up this week, but I’m just not ready. I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mum would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss,” Woods wrote on Monday. “Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my Mum’s passing.”
Woods’ mother, Tida, played a huge role not only in Tiger’s upbringing but also in his golfing career.
“My Mum was a force of nature all her own, her spirit was simply undeniable,” Woods wrote on Tuesday. “She was quick with the needle and a laugh. She was my biggest fan, greatest supporter; without her, none of my personal achievements would have been possible. She was loved by so many, but especially by her two grandchildren, Sam and Charlie. Thank you all for your support, prayers and privacy at this difficult time for me and my family. Love you Mum.”

The Genesis Invitational was intended to be Woods’ first official start since the 2024 Open Championship. He underwent back surgery in September and did not compete in the Hero World Challenge (another event he hosts) in December. He participated with his son, Charlie, in the PNC Championship in late December (they lost in a playoff), but that was a 36-hole event with carts. He has also taken part in two TGL events since then.
Woods withdrew from the Genesis Invitational during the second round last year due to flu-like symptoms.
This week’s tournament, a Signature Event, has been relocated to Torrey Pines in San Diego instead of its usual venue at Riviera in Pacific Palisades, California, due to the devastating fires in the area.
Jake Knapp has been added to the field in Woods’ place.
