Seamus Power carded a third round of 69 to climb to four-under at the WM Phoenix Open in Arizona and will be looking for a low scoring Sunday to push himself up the leaderboard to claim crucial FedEx Cup points.

Power was level par for his day after he made the turn with two bogeys and two birdies but he finished strong with birdies on his 12th and 17th holes to edge into the top-40.

The West Waterford man is a distant fourteen shots behind Belgium’s Thomas Detry who carded a superb round of 65 to open up a five shot lead on 18-under-par.

Chasing his first career win on any of the main tours, Detry birdied four of his first five holes to break free from the chasing pack and two birdies in his last five holes allowed him to move five clear of Rasmus Hojgaard, Daniel Berger, Michael Kim and the re-emerging Jordan Spieth

“Getting off to such a good start was kind of the dream today,” Detry said. “I felt a bit nervous on the first and I hit that 9-iron to 2, 3 feet. Hit many fairways, as well. I don’t think I missed a shot in the first five, six holes.”

Spieth, who carded a bogey free round of 67, is coming off a wrist surgery and feels like he’s ahead of schedule.

“This is certainly ahead of schedule for this week,” Spieth said. “I’ve had a good history here, so we’ll see how I continue to progress on other courses, but tomorrow, I’m going to have to hit more fairways because I’m going to have to hit it closer to try to catch Thomas.”

Should Detry start to wobble, world number one Scottie Scheffler will be looking to overturn an eight shot gap from ten-under-par.
