As she dashed into a taxi in preparation to run for her flight back home from Marrakesh, it was a fittingly bonkers finish to what has been a whirlwind year for Sara Byrne who added the cherry to a terrific season by securing a full Ladies European Tour card for 2025.

Rounds of 68, 72, 70, 72 and a bogey-free 69 saw the Dromoland Castle star secure the all important top-20 finish in 15th place on twelve-under-par to earn Category 12 status on the Ladies European Tour next year to compliment the full Epson Tour status she has in America.

“Yeah I am over the moon, it doesn’t really feel like it’s real at the moment. I’m in a taxi at the minute absolutely running to the airport. I am running to catch a flight,” said Byrne who capped off her final season as an amateur with two collegiate wins for Miami and an unbeaten run at the Curtis Cup as Great Britain and Ireland beat America for the first time since 2016 in Sunningdale before turning professional in September.

“It feels absolutely amazing and to come out of that week with a full tour card is a cherry on top for an unbelievable 2024. I can tell nine-year-old Sara I did it!”

The 23-year-old was inspired to play golf when she lined the fairways at the 2016 Curtis Cup in Dun Laoghaire Golf Club to watch Leona Maguire, Olivia Mehaffey and Maria Dunne in action for GB&I.

Maguire has gone on to achieve great things and Byrne could be joining her in some of the higher profile Ladies European Tour events next year.

Anna Foster and Annabel Wilson have also secured cards in Morocco this week and they will all link up with their friend Lauren Walsh who enjoyed an excellent rookie campaign in Europe.

“We knew this was going to be coming for a couple of years there was a big bunch of us ready to get out there on tour. So, to finally have a big contingent of us out on tour makes it all the sweeter really,” said Byrne.

Both Byrne and Walsh missed out on LPGA Tour cards at the Final Stage of Q-School in Arizona but the Douglas native was eager to get back on the horse quickly and feels the LET finale was the perfect opportunity to respond as she gave herself an early Christmas present.

“Maybe like three days! I had to get from one continent to the other but a couple of days off golf alright not quite off travelling. It was back to back weeks really and it was honestly good to have it so close and not have too much of a break in between so I could be kept in the competitive mood and I just got out there swinging this week.”
