Canadian Taylor Pendrith is the man to catch at the PGA Tour CJ Cup after a spectacular third round 63 propelled him to the top of the leaderboard.
In what is his 74th PGA Tour start, Pendrith is still looking for his first win with his best finish to date being a T2 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2022 and he’s given himself a great chance of claiming the ‘W’ after bagging back-to-back eagles on the 5th and 6th on Saturday which unbelievably is the third time that feat has been accomplished on the PGA Tour this season.
Pendrith, who is making his CJ Cup tournament debut this week, is on 19-under par and holds a one shot lead over Jack Knapp with Ben Kohles and Matt Wallace one shot further back. He’ll have his work cut out though if he is to take the win with Knapp leading the field in strokes gained approach to the green and coming off the back of his own maiden Tour victory already this season at the Mexico Open. Knapp is also showing some serious form with three top-five finishes in his 11 starts and carded a third round 67 to add to his two opening 64’s.
As for Ben Kohles, rounds of 65, 66, 65 see him at 17-under par and he’s also chasing that elusive first Tour victory in what is his 68th start, with his best finish to date coming at the 2023 RSM Classic where he finished 5th. Kohles was T6 at the Puerto Rico Open this year and was also the No. 1 on the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour Points List as well as being named Korn Ferry Player of the Year.
2023 Corales Puntacana Championship winner and four-time DP World Tour Winner Matt Wallace is chasing his second Tour win and if successful would become the first Englishman to win the CJ Cup and will be hoping to recreate his opening day heroics where he returned a 63 before subsequent rounds of 66 and 67.
Ireland’s interest in the event ended when Seamus Power (-2) missed the cut which fell at six-under par.
