Shane Lowry will be content to sit in and watch the world go by today if there are any weather delays at Augusta National caused by the incoming thunderstorms.

Lowry has been given an afternoon tee time for his opening round of the 88th Masters but thunderstorms look like saturating the course and delaying his start. When he does eventually begin, the Clara man will have to battle a soggy golf course and some strong gusts.

“To be honest, I didn’t even know that,” he said of the 35mph winds. “Obviously the rain first tomorrow, I have a later tee time so it’s probably pretty good. I am going to know what the weather is doing and if there will be delays or anything.

“Yeah, as regards the wind, you just have to pick your wind, your shot, and hit it. It’s kind of in the lap of the gods then. You need to be in control of it, and when you get out of position you just need to make sure your worst score is a bogey.”

Lowry spoke earlier in the week of needing to be near the top of his game and have Lady Luck favour him if he is to become the first Irishman to win the green jacket this weekend and the tricky conditions might act as the leveller he requires.

The Offaly man has won big tournaments in tough conditions before such as the 2009 Irish Open as an amateur, the 2015 WGC and the 2019 Open Championship and he certainly has the shot making ability for Augusta.

“I think that’s kind of the way you need to play this course. I’ll be ready for it. I’m sure everybody will be ready for the course. Yeah, certain times where if the wind is like that that you might hit good shots and not get rewarded. You have to take it on the chin and move on.

“Yeah, when the wind is swirling here it’s very hard. Sounds like going to be a tricky Masters and scoring is going to be quite difficult. I don’t mind that. Ready for the challenge.”
