Lachlan Wood won his maiden G4D Tour title on home soil with a three-stroke victory on his debut at the ISPS HANDA Australian All Abilities Championship in Sydney.
Wood, Australia’s leading player on the World Ranking for Golfers with Disability, birdied two of his final three holes to card a closing one-under-par 70 at The Australian Golf Club to finish level par in the 54-hole championship.
Ireland’s Brendan Lawlor finished in solo second on three over after a final-round 73, with Wood’s compatriot Cameron Pollard a shot further back after all three players began the day in a share of the lead.
“It’s a great feeling to finally get the job done,” he said.
“‘It was a great final group. We were all square teeing off the first so it was a good battle for the last eight.”
Wood, who came into the week as the World Number 15, was a model of consistency during the week, with the 32-year-old registering rounds of 71 and 72 over the opening two days.
He birdied the par three fourth to take the outright lead for the first time on Saturday and held a slender one-shot advantage over his two playing partners at the turn despite a bogey at the sixth.
Despite another dropped shot at the par five 14th his lead had grown as Lawlor and Pollard were unable to build any momentum, before Wood finished strongly to cap an excellent week in what was his third G4D Tour appearance of the year.
“That experience at that level definitely propelled me a little,” he added. “I came back home and straight away won a couple of Pro-Ams which got me a bit more comfortable and ready for an event like this.”
World Number One and defending champion Kipp Popert recovered from a disappointing start to his final round to card a 74 that featured three back-nine birdies and finish fourth.
The G4D Tour will return next month when the G4D Tour @ Ras Al Khaimah Championship takes place from January 22-23, 2024.
