After a long season of events around the country the event category winners from each day, along with the Flogas Order of Merit qualifiers came together for the Grand Final at The K Club, Palmer North course and history was made when fourteen-year-old sensation Lucy Morrison became the first female Champion Golfer of the Year.
Morrison, from Clandeboye Golf Club, claimed a two shot victory with a stunning 45 points to deservedly claim the spoils as she battled some heavy showers en route to glory.
The teenager edged out Eunan Doyle from Ballymoney (43 points) while James Morrisey from Enniscorthy claimed a spot on the podium with 41 points on a back nine count back.
Irish Golfer Events stalwart, rain, hail or shine, Errol Flynn earned himself a season pass for 2024 after scooping the Flogas Order of Merit title while Kevin McPartland, Graham Lawlor, Len Skully and Terry Doyle were dialled in on Monday to claim nearest the pin prizes.
But the day belonged to Lucy who took home a stack of prizes and the Champion Golfer of the Year trophy which she will keep on the mantelpiece and away from her father (who acted as caddy for the day!).
“Yeah it’s very good, it was a good experience, everyone was very kind and helpful today so it was brilliant,” she beamed. “I putted very well, my chipping could do with some work but apart from that it was a good round! I’ll have to find a place for the trophy as you can see it’s pretty big so I’ll find somewhere!”
It was a fitting end to what has been another fantastic season for Irish Golfer Events with players treated to personalised gifts and merchandise on arrival, breakfast, golf at the Palmer North Course and dinner afterwards.
Our thanks go to all the players who took part in 2023, the venues and the greenkeepers who keep them so well and of course to our sponsors Waterford, Flogas, Kinetica, Yoplait and TaylorMade who help make the events possible.
Watch out for the 2024 schedule in the coming months!
