Viktor Hovland has moved ahead of Rory McIlroy in the betting for this week’s BMW PGA Championship after BoyleSports clipped him into 7/1 favourite from 15/2.
The FedEx Cup champion is one of the 12 European Ryder Cup stars teeing it up this week at Wentworth in Surrey ahead of their bid to wrestle the trophy back from the Americans when they go head-to-head in Italy later this month.
Team USA, led by captain Zach Johnson, are favourites to keep hold of the trophy but the chances of a European victory are improving according to latest odds, with BoyleSports trimming Luke Donald’s men into 5/4 from 11/8. World number two Rory McIlroy is 4/1 favourite ahead of Jon Rahm (5/1) to finish the Ryder Cup as top points scorer for Europe.
McIlroy goes into the BMW PGA Championship with a previous victory at Wentworth on his CV but is now second favourite to Hovland, while Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry is an increasingly popular 18/1 shot. Lowry, buoyed by a wildcard pick from captain Luke Donald, is chasing his first victory of the year having pipped McIlroy by a shot in last year’s staging.
2021 champion Billy Horschel looks good value at 30/1 after a return to form at last week’s Horizon Irish Open, while Ludvig Aberg’s rapid ascent that’s seen him secure a PGA Tour card and a DP World Tour win along with a Ryder Cup selection within four months of turning professional sees him competitively priced at 20/1.
Lawrence Lyons, Spokesperson for BoyleSports commented: “This is the final competitive action for Europe’s Ryder Cup stars before they take on the Americans and their form is making for one of our closest Ryder Cup betting heats for many years.”
