Rory McIlroy is being well backed to overcome a modest deficit and earn himself a huge payday as the prestigious FedEx Cup Playoffs reach their climax at East Lake in Atlanta this week.
BoyleSports has clipped McIlroy into 10/3 from 4/1 to win the Tour Championship even though the FedEx Cup handicap system means the World Number two will start the tour finale with a three-shot gap to bridge on leader Scottie Scheffler.
McIlroy stormed to the FedEx title last season despite teeing off six shots behind Scheffler and carding a triple bogey seven on his first hole and is seeking a record-setting fourth title this year.
Thirty players remain in the hunt for the lucrative top prize of $18m and Scheffler’s two-shot advantage over Viktor Hovland at tee-off makes him a short 7/5 shot to land the bulky cheque, with last week’s winner Hovland (5/1) and Jon Rahm (8/1) hoping to bridge respective deficits of two and four shots.
The same four players lead the betting in the low 72-hole scoring market as well, though the order is changed slightly as Rahm overtakes Hovland to become third favourite.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Scottie Scheffler is in pole position, but they’ll be breathing down his neck from the off and Rory McIlroy is by far the most popular pick in the chasing pack.”
