American Justin Thomas superbly kept both his PGA Tour Play-Off Series hopes, as well as his USA Ryder Cup selection goals alive with a rousing second round 65 on day two of the ‘regular’ season-ending Wyndham Championship in North Carolina.

‘JT’ ended the round at five-under and just outside the top-20 in the event again being staged on the Sedgefield course in suburban Greensboro.

It was a wecolme return to form for Thomas who teed-up having missed the halfway cut in three of the four major championships of 2023.

Thomas also arrived at the $US 7.6m event lying 76th on the FedEx Cup standings, and heads to the weekend rounds predicted to move to 75th, and with the double USA Ryder Cup capped star needing to break into the leading 70, and thus earn a much-needed start in next week’s opening Play-Off Series event in Memphis

Such a result would clearly boost Thomas’ hopes of being picked by USA captain Zack Johnson later this month ahead of September’s Ryder Cup in Rome.

Thomas was asked how important was it to him to produce a display as mirrored in Friday’s round of seven birdies and just the two dropped shots.

“Literally, I wanted to make the cut very badly, I mean, if I wanted any chance at what I want to do the rest of the year,” he said.

“You know, it is what it is. I was going to give it the best I had and shoot as low as I could whether that was 65 or 75 today.

“Fortunately for me it was a 65. I’m just going to go do the best I can and just give it everything I have this weekend because I don’t have much to lose”.

Thomas will play the third round in the company of England’s Matt Wallace, who also harbours the goal of earning one of Luke Donald’s Rome picks.
