Adam Fahey and Harry O’Hara were the big winners in Lisburn at the Irish U-16 and U-14 Boys’ Amateur Open Championship.

Fahey, who has recently joined Portmarnock, shot rounds of 74 and 72 before four birdies on Friday helped to keep him clear of the field to claim the U-16 crown.

And the 15-year-old, who will still be eligible to play U-16 next year, and has already won Irish Boys’ titles at U-13 and U-14 showed great composure to finish on +2, three shots clear of Rafael Poli (Helen’s Bay).

“I did really well and scrambled really really well particularly on day two when there was tough wind. And today I handled the pressure and the course and the wind really well. I was in a good place mentally,” said Fahey.

“I can’t wait for the next event and can’t wait for next year as well. I love golf and have worked hard this year. I lost a bit of form at the start of the year because I was doing my Junior Cert but have come good in the last few weeks.”

O’Hara laid the foundations for his eight-shot win with rounds of 71 and 70 on Wednesday and Thursday. The Clandeboye youngster closed out with four birdies today for a sensational -3 total.

“Wednesday morning I woke up and there was a delay, no play before 10am so I was sitting there for a two hour delay but ended up sitting on the sofa for about seven hours,” joked O’Hara.

“But it was good. If somebody had said to me at the start of the week you were going to win by eight I would be quite surprised.

“A lot of the guys I will be playing with next year I would have played with last year when they were U-14. I’m going to keep working hard.”
