Project Ukraine, which is dedicated to supporting young golfers from the Ukrainian Golf Federation, successfully staged its second coaching camp from 26th June to 1st July at the prestigious MacDonald Portal Golf and Spa Resort. Thirteen talented golfers from the Ukrainian Golf Federation, including those who have fled from the war and those residing in Ukraine, participated in this transformative event.
The coaching camp offered an array of exciting activities, enabling the young golfers to enhance their skills and ignite their passion for the sport. The participants attended the Betfred British Masters, witnessing top-level golf and drawing inspiration from the world’s best players. The day was made even more special as they received invaluable coaching tips at the driving range from Matthew Southgate, who qualified for The Open.
Former World No.1 and Olympic Gold Medallist, Justin Rose, hosted a meeting with the young golfers. Rose, expressed his support and took part in a memorable Q&A session, followed by autograph signings and photo opportunities with the young golfers. The day was topped off with a meeting with Sir Nick Faldo, the host of the Betfred British Masters, who gave words of inspiration and advice to the aspiring golfers.
Throughout the camp, the young golfers benefited from coaching sessions conducted by industry experts. Sophie Walker, TV golf analyst, presenter, and former Ladies European Tour golf professional, led an insightful clinic focusing on refining the short game. Peter Barber, Head Coach to England North West Under 18’s boys, completed further training on the course and practice area. Natalie Lowe, from Pro-Fit Golf Conditioning, joined the camp to conduct a strength session to help the young golfers train for peak performance.
In a bid to enhance their performance, the young golfers were provided with new grips from Golf Pride in the vibrant colours of the Ukrainian flag.
The camp concluded with an exciting match against local junior golfers from Hill Valley Golf Club, where the participants showcased their newfound skills and sportsmanship.
Veronika Rastvortseva, a representative of Project Ukraine, and formerly from the Ukrainian Golf Federation expressed her gratitude, stating, “We are thrilled to witness the incredible growth and development of these young golfers during the coaching camp. The support and guidance provided by industry professionals and esteemed players has been instrumental in shaping their golfing journey. We remain committed to empowering these promising young players.
Veronika added, “The R&A has supported this journey since we started on it and we are grateful for their steadfast commitment and belief in our mission to empower young golfers in Ukraine. Their support has been instrumental in the success and impact of Project Ukraine.”
Ivan Malovychko, a 22-year-old golfer from Kharkiv, Ukraine, has gone from living under the constant threat of war to studying at Edge Golf College in Portugal. A four-time champion of Ukraine, Ivan began his golf career at the Junior Golf Academy at the Superior Golf Club in Kharkiv. Ivan reflected on the experience and said, “This coaching camp has been a life-changing opportunity for me. The chance to meet and learn from Justin Rose and Matthew Southgate has fuelled my passion for golf and inspired me to reach new heights. We are immensely grateful to Project Ukraine for this unforgettable experience.”
