Seamus Power will be hoping he’s shaken off a hip injury that forced him out after just nine holes on day one of the Genesis Scottish Open here at the Renaissance club.

The double PGA Tour winning Irishman was making his debut in the premier Scottish event when he advised his two playing partners he was withdrawing after nine holes on day of the $US 9m co-sanctioned event.

The Waterford golfer was two-over at the time.

The affable Irishman’s has returned to Europe very much with the goal of boarding September’s special charter Ryder Cup charter flight to Rome as he revealed in speaking ahead of the Scottish event with Irish Golfer Magazine.

“I have a good run in this next stretch of five events I’ll play, and they include the Play-Offs back in the States, so I know strong showings could lead to a hopeful captain’s pick,” said Power.

“Playing in a Ryder Cup is something that I would dearly love to achieve, and I’m not that far away from the present top-three on that ‘World’ points table for Rome.

“So, if you show good form I can at least give Luke (Donald) something to think about, so that will be my goal over these events, while I’m returning to Europe early September to play the Irish Open and the BMW PGA.

“Playing the Ryder Cup was not on my 2023 goals radar when qualifying got under way but if I can reach my other goals coming up to the end of the ‘22/’23 PGA Tour season, and be in with a chance of earning a captain’s pick then I would be thrilled.”

It goes without saying that should Power miss teeing-up, and in what will be only his second Open Championship, it could prove to be a huge setback for Power’s ambitions of making Luke Donald’s side.
