Coming off back-to-back cuts made and a season-best T12 finish at the Amundi German Masters, Olivia Mehaffey is looking forward to getting back in the swing of things at this week’s Ladies Open by Pickala on the outskirts of the Finnish capital Helsinki.
14 Finnish players will compete in the 126-woman field that includes defending champion Anne-Charlotte Mora, last week’s winner Diksha Dagar, German teen sensation Chiara Noja and Thailand’s Trichat Cheenglab who currently leads the Rookie of the Year standings after producing a final-round 64 to take solo second place at the Tipsport Czech Ladies Open last week.
This week promises to be a different test, however, and Mehaffey, who currently lies 101st in the season-long Race to Costa Del Sol Rankings feels that the course may be a good fit. “I like the course,” she told Irish Golfer, “It’s very nice. A little bit longer than the course we played last week. I feel you have to drive it well and then you will have chances.”
The Tandragee star ranks in the LET’s top 25 percent in driving distance, though has struggled for accuracy, but recent weeks have seen overall improvement and if she can get putts to start dropping then she could be in for a big week in Finland.
“I felt I played solid last week,” she said. “It was a low scoring course and I didn’t hole as many putts as I would have liked. But overall, I feel like my game is progressing nicely and I look forward to competing again this week.”
Mehaffey will be in the final group to hit the fairways when the 54-hole event gets underway on Thursday, as she’s joined by the aforementioned Cheenglab and local girl Noora Komulainen on the tenth tee at 14:49 (12:49 Irish time).
