Leona Maguire is being well backed to follow up her second LPGA Tour victory with an even more lucrative win as BoyleSports cut her into 18/1 from 40/1 to break her major championship duck this week.
The Cavan woman made a significant breakthrough last year at the Drive On Championship in Florida when she became the first Irish golfer to win a tournament on the LPGA Tour, but she now has two wins on the US circuit after a final round of 64 on Sunday at the Meijer LPGA Classic in Michigan handed her a two-shot victory over Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn.
Maguire now tees it up at this week’s KPMG PGA Championship at Baltusrol as one of the leading European contenders with the former World Number One amateur hot in pursuit of favourites Atthaya Thitikul (10/1) and JY Ko (12/1).
She now just a short 6/4 shot to add to her LPGA tally before the season is out, but punters have their eyes on a hectic major schedule with the US Open, Evian Championship and Women’s Open all pencilled in before mid-August. The chances of Maguire landing her first major championship this summer have now been backed down to 5/1 from 8/1.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Irish punters are banking an even more prestigious honour now that Leona Maguire is a multiple tour winner and confidence is growing that a landmark major victory could arrive as early as this week.”
