Jay Monahan’s position as commissioner of the PGA Tour is under threat according the latest odds with BoyleSports following the shock merger with LIV Golf, while Henrik Stenson being reinstated as Ryder Cup captain is also being considered by punters.
The bookie has made Monahan a short 5/4 shot to resign or be ousted from his role before the end of the year after Tuesday’s bombshell announcement that the controversial Saudi breakaway golf league was merging with both the PGA and DP World Tours “to unify the game of golf on a global basis.”
Monahan has reportedly faced calls to resign from some players who had defended the Tour and claimed to know little about Tuesday’s announcement in advance of the statement, with double major champion Collin Morikawa revealing that he learnt the news on Twitter.
The chances of Team USA lifting the Ryder Cup have been boosted by the surprise development as the Americans have been clipped into 4/7 from 4/6 to win in Italy later this year. PGA Champion Brooks Koepka was expected to qualify for the USA side in his own right, but the shock move may open the door for the likes of major winners Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Bryson DeChambeau, who were all struggling to qualify having defected to the Saudi funded tour.
Ryder Cup veterans Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia and Ian Pouter may be back in the frame for the European side, but they have been eased slightly to 15/8 from 7/4, while the chances of LIV Golf rebel Henrik Stenson retuning to the captain’s role he lost to Luke Donald look unlikely at 33/1.
