Olivia Mehaffey carded five bogeys and three birdies on her way to an opening two-over 74 at the LET’s Helsinborg Open in Sweden.
The round sees the Tandragee lass end the day in a tie for 50th, six strokes off the lead, which is shared by local player Caroline Hedwall, Ana Pelaez Trivino from Spain and Nicole Garcia of South Africa, all of whom carded four-under-par 68s.
Hedwall made six birdies in windy conditions at Allerum Golf Club to lead by two early in the day, but she found the water with her second shot and double bogeyed her last hole, the ninth.
“It was unfortunate to finish with a double bogey on the last, but to be honest, it wasn’t that bad of a shot, it just got caught by the wind and that pushed down in the water,” said the 34-year-old four-time Solheim Cup player. “I’m pleased with how I played. I started a bit shakily, but I missed in the right places. I putted really well and actually played really well on my back nine.
“I’m pleased with my start and it’s good to be up there on day one when you’re playing at home. I used to live here in Helsingborg for 15 years so this feels like home and then we are going to Stockholm next week, which is home, so it couldn’t be better.”
