Former US Open Champion Michael Campbell is set to join Ian Woosnam on the list of Major winners who will play in next month’s Irish Legends at Seapoint Golf Links.
A plethora of golfing greats will descend on the east coast of Ireland and the stunning Seapoint Golf Links from June 22-25, with Major winners and former Ryder Cup greats all set to battle it out for the prestigious title.
Stars from the world of entertainment and sport will also wow the crowds as they tee it up in the Legends Tour Wapp Celebrity Series, the curtain-raiser which will see actor James Nesbitt joined by a host of other personalities from the world of sport and entertainment.
Among the legendary player names in the field are a pair of Major champions, with New Zealand’s Campbell set to play in the event for the first time.
Not only is Campbell renowned for being one of only two Kiwis to lift a Major trophy – having beaten Tiger Woods to the US Open in 2005 – but he will also be familiar among the home crowds in Ireland, having twice won on Irish soil during his distinguished DP World Tour and PGA TOUR career.
In 2002, Campbell claimed the Smurfit European Open title in dramatic style at The K Club, overcoming Pádraig Harrington, among others, by one shot. A year later he lifted the famous Irish Open trophy courtesy of a play-off victory over Thomas Bjørn and Peter Hedblom.
“I am delighted to be returning to Irish soil in June for the Irish Legends,” Campbell said. “It is obviously a country which is very close to my heart having won there in successive years in 2002 and 2003, and I feel like I have had a special affinity with the fans there ever since.
“I have never played Seapoint, but it looks beautiful – it is great that we can go to Ireland and play these incredible links courses, which is what golf in that country is all about. I can’t wait and I’m sure it is going to be a fantastic week.”
South African James Kingston – who received the John Jacobs Trophy after securing the Legends Tour Order of Merit title last season following an impressive campaign which saw him claim his second Legends Tour title at the Swiss Senior Masters and an incredible nine top-10 finishes – will also be teeing it up in Ireland as he looks to continue his fine form from last year.
The event will be hosted by former Ryder Cup and DP World Tour player Des Smyth and fellow former Tour professional Roddy Carr.
Tickets are now on sale, with prices starting from €15. The Irish Legends at Seapoint Golf Links will also host both Alliance Series and Celebrity Series events.
Since its inception, the Alliance Series has been a universal success. The format provides an exclusive opportunity to live the life of a golf legend as everyday players play alongside two professionals in a team event format, as well as an individual tournament against other Alliance competitors, in front of crowds and TV cameras.
The Celebrity Series also offers amateurs the chance to play with a golf legend and a star-studded field of stars from the world of sport and entertainment in front of crowds during a pro-am experience.
As part of the Alliance Series (€10,000 per person) event at Seapoint Golf Links, participants will receive two rounds alongside the Legends Tour players, with the top 15 playing the Championship Sunday prior to the professionals. Amateurs will also receive a spot in the Celebrity Series (€2,500 per person) and will be given four nights’ accommodation at the four-star D-Hotel in Drogheda.
The 2022 Irish Legends, hosted by McGinley, took place at Rosapenna Hotel & Golf Resort as Phillip Price – a teammate of the Irishman’s at the 2002 Ryder Cup – claimed a one-shot victory.
The upcoming Legends Tour season promises to be the biggest since its rebranding in 2020, with larger fields, record-breaking prize funds and new venues hosting major events like Trump International Golf Links Aberdeen.
