Award-winning journalist and broadcaster Dan Walker is hoping his golf will make the headlines this summer as he tees it up in the Legends Tour Wapp Celebrity Series event at Trump International Golf Links Aberdeen.

A first-time Legends Tour venue, the Aberdeenshire course will host the 2023 Staysure PGA Seniors Championship from Wednesday, August 23 as a strong field of over-50s golfers including major winners Ian Woosnam and Michael Campbell compete at the stunning Scottish links layout.

Taking place as the official tournament gets underway, the popular Wapp Celebrity Series will hold its final regular event of the 2023 season as stars from the world of entertainment and sport compete to secure a place at the Celebrity Series Grand Final, with the opportunity to win a share of a £100,000 prize for their chosen charities.

A scratch golfer who is a member at Sheffield’s Hallamshire Golf Club – home course of 2022 US Open champion and eight-time DP World Tour winner Matt Fitzpatrick – Walker will be returning to play at the Legends Tour Wapp Celebrity Series for the first time since he competed for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital in the 2021 Celebrity Series Grand Final in Mauritius.

The broadcaster – who left the BBC last year to present 5 News on Channel 5 – will be joined in Scotland by former Manchester United midfielder and Celtic and Scotland football manager Gordon Strachan, as well as legendary Scotland Rugby Union captain Gavin Hastings.

An active patron for Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Walker, 46, will be hoping to win the final Wapp Celebrity Series event of the season. The winner in Aberdeenshire will receive a place at the Celebrity Series Grand Final – an event set to return to Constance Belle Mare Plage in Mauritius in December.

Walker said: “I am really looking forward to getting back out on the golf course for the Wapp Celebrity Series event in Aberdeenshire. I have only heard great things about the course and so can’t wait to play it alongside a Legends Tour professional later this summer to try and qualify for the Wapp Celebrity Series Grand Final.”

“I have lived in Sheffield for many years and my children have all benefited from the brilliant hospital. The quality of the wonderful staff and care is second to none, and they support to ensure the technology and equipment matches. In 2021 I was able to help the charity after being invited to play in Mauritius – it would be great to once again help the team at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital this year.”

A whole host of other famous faces are also set to compete at the Wapp Celebrity Series event in Scotland, including Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler, television and film star James Nesbitt and former rugby union player Mike Tindall, MBE.

General tickets are now on sale, with day tickets priced at £15 for adults, £10 for concessions (over 50s), while juniors (under 16s) are free.

Phil Harrison, chief executive officer of the Legends Tour, said: “We are extremely excited to be hosting the 2023 Staysure PGA Seniors Championship event at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire. It is great also to be able to hold the final Wapp Celebrity Series event before the Grand Final as part of the week’s golf.

“With such a good field of celebrities taking part, including Dan Walker, Gordon Strachan and Mike Tindall, the event promises to be a great way to kick off the week and an exceptional day out for all making the trip.”

Limited places are still available to compete in the playing experiences – including playing alongside the celebrities – at the 2023 Staysure PGA Seniors Championship.

The Celebrity Series playing experience will see participants team up with a celebrity and Legends Tour professional for one round of golf while receiving access to the player’s lounge for breakfast, bespoke gifts and hospitality post-event.

Amateur golfers looking for an exclusive opportunity to live the life of a golf legend across several days can sign up for the Alliance Series event in Scotland, playing in front of live crowds and TV cameras for four rounds of golf – one in the Celebrity Series and three in the Alliance Series. Players will also receive a four-night stay in the official tournament hotel, a bespoke gift pack and invitations to all exclusive functions.
