Pádraig Harrington and Darren Clarke both carded one-under 71s on the opening day of the Insperity Invitational.

The pair trail former Open champion Justin Leonard, Charles Schab Cup champion Steven Alker and Collin Montgomerie by five shots on the PGA TOUR Champions.

Harrington was returning after four weeks off and it told as he mixed five birdies with two double bogeys in an erratic opening round.

Doubles came on the par-3 13th and par-4 18th as he played the course from back to front.

Birdies brightened up the card particularly on the back nine as he came home with seven pars and birdies on 2 and 6.

Amazingly, Senior Open champion Clarke also coughed up two double bogeys on the penultimate hole of each nine.

The 2011 Open champion had started well with three birdies in seven holes before a double on 17 dropped him back to one-under.

Clarke responded with back-to-back birdies on 1 and 2 and a sixth birdie of the day on 6 lifted him to within two of the lead before three shots went in two holes and he fell into a share of 31st alongside Harrington.
