Roscommon’s Olivia Costello is just three shots off the lead after the opening day of the Girls U16 Amateur Championship at Enville-Highgate.

Costello sits on one-over-par after an opening 73 which is good enough for third place as Sweden’s Emma Larsson leads after a two-under 70 with Germany’s Antonia Steiner a shot further back in second.

Costello has enjoyed a trophy-laden period recently, winning the Scottish Girls before earning schools success in the All-Ireland finals.

The 15-year-old is the highest ranked World Amateur Golf Ranking player in the field at 240th and she started well with an opening birdie.

Bogeys followed on five, eight and twelve but her patience was rewarded with a closing birdie.

Black Bush starlet Niamh O’Grady also shares third place on one-over-par.

Oughterard’s Kate Dillon is a shot further back in a share of ninth place on two-over.

Royal Portrush’s Hannah Lee-McNamara is on plus three after a 75.

The lowest handicap in the field is Roisin Scanlon at a cool 4.1 but the Woburn golfer struggled to an eight-over 80.
