Irish punters are backing Leona Maguire to make her mark on the highest stage this week as BoyleSports cut her into 40/1 from 50/1 to win the first major of the season.

The Cavan woman shot to worldwide fame when she put in a five-star performance on debut at the Solheim Cup in 2021, then made a significant breakthrough last year at the Drive On Championship in Florida last year, becoming the first Irish golfer to win a tournament on the LPGA Tour.

Now Maguire tees it up at the Chevron Championship this week as one of the leading European contenders. The former World Number 1 amateur is a 9/1 shot to finish best of the European contingent as the tournament moves to its new home in Texas, leaving only Georgia Hall, Celine Boutier and Charley Hull ahead of her on the list of most likely winners from Europe.

County Antrim’s Stephanie Meadow, who has two major top-tens on her CV, is also taking part but the Jordanstown woman will have to overcome outside odds of 350/1 to break her major championship duck.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Irish punters have been eyeing an even more prestigious honour for Leona Maguire since her Tour victory last season and an increasing number are confident that this could be the week for a landmark major victory.”
