World Number One Jon Rahm will play no further part in the 2023 PLAYERS Championship after withdrawing from the tournament ahead of his second round at TPC Sawgrass.

The Spaniard has withdrawn due to illness after falling foul to a stomach virus meaning world number three, Rory McIlroy and world number two, Scottie Scheffler will be in a two-ball for their second round.

Rahm had opened with a one-under 71 which included two birdies and a dropped shot on his penultimate hole, the par-3 8th but he is unable to continue.

Scheffler meanwhile is on four-under after a late birdie barrage gave him a 68 with McIlroy well back on four-over after a dismal 76.

Overnight leader Chad Ramey has not been caught by the morning starters and leads Collin Morikawa by one on eight-under-par.
