LIV Golf has returned for its second season and so too has the war of words with LIV CEO Greg Norman telling Rory McIlroy to mind his mouth and be careful with what he says.
Norman’s words for McIlroy are in response to the Northern Irishman’s call for the Shark to step down from his position in the Saudi backed organisation.
Norman was afforded the opportunity to address the four-time major winner’s comments in a video interview with Golf.com in the latest chapter of the ongoing power struggle between LIV and the PGA Tour.
Last November, McIlroy publicly called for Norman ‘to exit stage left’ asserting that conversations between both tours cannot commence until there is, ‘an adult in the room.’
This isn’t the first time McIlroy has been in the spotlight recently as regards LIV with Sergio Garcia labelling him as ‘immature’ which caused the breakdown in their relationship.
Now Norman is having his bite of the cherry, believing McIlroy’s statements are misinformed.
“Rory doesn’t know anything, right? All due respect, Rory. He doesn’t know anything about LIV,” Norman said to Golf.com.
“He knows something about the PGA Tour, he sits on the PAC council. It doesn’t have the power that you think because the board has the power, right? Rory doesn’t know what he’s talking about because he doesn’t know the facts,” Norman said.
Then came the word of warning from Norman to the Holywood native.
“I’ve always been a fan of Rory McIlroy’s,” Norman said. “My advice to him would be, just sit back, take stock, watch what you say, because in the end there will be a situation where, you know, he’ll be asked a few questions that he may not want to be answering.”
Norman also feels that the pushback from McIlroy and Woods particularly has been forced upon them by the PGA Tour.
“There are going to be a few who are probably being asked to be vitriolic against the LIV guys for whatever reason,” Norman said. “. . . Until you completely understand what you’re talking about, don’t open your mouth, because you’ll only embarrass yourself.”
“. . . That’s my read on it, to be honest with you.”
