Tiger Woods has announced his return to competitive action at next week’s Genesis Invitational in what will be his first competitive appearance since a missed cut at the 150th Open Championship last July.

Woods who is the host of the tournament at Riviera – where he has never won – in Los Angeles sparked rumours of a potential retirement as he bid a teary farewell to St Andrews last year and while performances in The Match and the PNC Championship did little to set the pulse racing last winter, his latest ‘comeback’ has come out of nowhere.

The Genesis Invitational which was won by LIV’s Joaquin Niemann last year will be the first PGA Tour event that Woods has played outside of a major championship since the 2020 ZOZO Championship.

“I’m ready to play an ACTUAL PGA Tour event next week @thegenesisinv,” the 47-year-old who has struggled to recover from a serious car accident in Ferbuary 2021 posted to his Twitter account.

The fifteen-time major winner was set to make a competitive appearance at his own Hero World Challenge but plantar fasciitis scuppered those hopes.

Woods played just three major championships in 2022 with his condition deteriorating each passing round. He is tied with Sam Snead for the most PGA Tour wins with 82 but admitted at the PNC Championship last year that walking was his biggest challenge.

“I can hit the golf ball. I just have a tougher time getting from Point A to Point B,” he said last year. “Hopefully after starting Monday, we’ll kind of try and fix this thing and get it healed up,” Woods said at the PNC Championship.
