Ronan Mullarney shot a four-over 75 in difficult conditions in the second round of the Toro Tour’s Azata Golf event, leaving the Galway man tied for second at level par for the championship.

After opening with an impressive 67 on Monday to hit the front, Mullarney, looking for his second successive victory on the Spanish circuit, was unable to capitalise in round two.

Two bogeys on his opening nine holes were compounded by two more on 10 and 12, but a timely birdie at the par-4 11th steadied the ship somewhat. Another birdie at the 14th saw Mullarney regain top spot on the leaderboard, but pars at the 16th and 18th – both par 5s – sandwiched a double-bogey six on 17, as the Galway man signed for a undoubtedly frustrating 75.

On the plus side, given the conditions, only Englishman Harvey Byers broke par, and his two-under round of 69 was comfortably the round of the day, moving Byers to a tie of second alongside Mullarney at evens.

They trail Jacob Lehman by two strokes after the Canadian followed his opening 68 with a second-round 72, and Korean Sebeen Young is two strokes further afield in solo fourth at +2.
