Seamus Power is eight shots off the pace at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am after a rollercoaster opening round where he carded a triple-bogey on his way to a level-par 72.

Power was playing on the Spyglass Hill course and had started well with a brace of opening birdies before taking eight shots to play the par-5 14th as he slipped the wrong side of par.

The Waterford man bounced back with two birdies in three holes before a bogey on the ninth saw him to the turn in level-par.

The two-time PGA Tour winner began to struggle on the back nine with dropped shots on the first and sixth but recovered with two birdies in his last three holes to cap off a topsy turvy round of golf.

Hank Leboida took advantage of the easier Monterrey Peninsula as he shot a superb eight-under 63 to take a one shot lead over Kurt Kitayama, Chad Ramey and England’s Harry Hall.

Leboida went on a birdie barrage from the ninth with five birdies in six holes to soar into the lead.

“For probably the last couple weeks or so I felt like my putting had really turned a corner. Even though I may not have shown the results. But I felt more confident standing over the ball. I liked what I was looking at visually standing over it. I knew it was just a matter of time. So today fortunately it was one of the days where quite a few of ’em did go in. Not every day is like that. I was glad I was able to take advantage of it today.”

The 29-year-old is chasing a maiden PGA Tour victory but isn’t thinking about that presently.

“Have fun. Have fun. If it’s blowing as it is right now it will be definitely a tough challenge playing Pebble Beach tomorrow. But I’m going to rest tonight, get my body ready and try to go out and do more of the same.”
