Jon Rahm might have the chance to return to world number one, but he’s not too fussed about it…

The 28-year-old admits he is paying no attention to the Official World Golf Rankings as he bids to become World Number One at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

Rahm needs to win for the fifth time in seven events to reach the summit of the world of golf, regardless of what current pace setter Rory McIlroy achieves in Dubai this week and after voicing his frustrations with the current algorithm, he says he couldn’t care less what the rankings say if he wins.

“If I win again tomorrow and I don’t get to No. 1, at this point I don’t care,” said the Spaniard after a six-under 66 propelled him into second place on ten-under, two behind Sam Ryder heading into the final round.

“I truly could not care any less if I did. I’ll get the chance to do something incredible and whether the ranking says I’m one or two or three, it doesn’t matter. It will be something very, very special.”

Rahm who overtook Patrick Cantlay after winning the Sentry Tournament of Champions and then Cameron Smith after making it two for two at the American Express to go to world number three has been irked by the current world rankings, believing he is the best player in the world despite his ranking not being number one.

Rahm has two wins at Torrey Pines, the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open and the 2021 US Open and he has not finished outside the top-10 in his last four starts. Despite playing his first 31 holes in one-over he is eleven-under for his last 23 holes including playing what he claims to be shot of the year on the 620yd par-5 9th as he drew in a 5-wood to set up an eagle three.

“Put it in the fairway and was contender for best shot the year for me already, which was the second shot into the green. I was just hoping to catch it on the center of the green, but I mean, I tattooed that 5-wood and ended up having 10 feet for eagle, which you don’t really expect on that back pin, but I ended up putting myself in a great situation and made the putt.

“The fact that that might be the 10th time trying it and I finally pulled it off. I’ve seen other people do it, but we’re talking about I was I think 260 meters, 285, 290 yards from the pin. I needed to get a nice draw on the 5-wood and hope that it was the right distance.”

Should the world number three win, he would be the 9th player since 1960 with 10 PGA Tour wins, including a major, before age 29.
