Jake Whelan dusted the cobwebs off to fine effect as he grabbed a share of the lead after day one of the Toro Tour’s La Canada Golf event.

On a tricky scoring day where nobody broke par, the Grange golfer signed for a one-over par round of 72 to sit alongside Paul Franquet and Egor Zotov at the head of affairs.

The former Mullingar Trophy winner carded two birdies either side of three dropped shots to lead the way from an Irish perspective as players look to fine-tune their game in Spain ahead of the new season.

Among them, Alps Tour graduate Ronan Mullarney was understandably rusty in recording a three-over par 74 that included two birdies.

Baltinglass talent Joseph Byrne was a shot further back after carding two birdies in his 75 while Portmarnock’s James Temple was just outside the top-10 after returning a six-over 77.
