Leona Maguire is hoping to ride the momentum in the second round of the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España at Alferini Golf after a late eagle in her opening round catapulted her into contention.

Maguire eagled the par-5 8th hole – her 17th – to move to five-under and sign for a 68 which leaves her in a share of third place, just a couple shy of early leader Cara Gainer.

“It was really solid round, I committed nicely to my targets,” said Maguire. “I drove the ball well, which you have to do out here, and it was nice to get that bonus eagle on eight to come in and finish with some nice momentum.”

Making just her sixth LET start of the campaign, the Cavan native began on the 11th hole and eased her way into the tournament with birdies on the fourteenth and seventeenth before dropping her only shot of the day on the 18th.

But the 27-year-old who arrives off the back of a top-10 and a runner-up finish on the LPGA Tour showed her class on the back nine.

A brace of birdies came on the third and fourth before that superb eagle put the icing on an inward effort of 32.

Cheered on by a significant number of Irish fans and with family on site, Maguire is determined to crown off a fabulous year with a first LET title and second tour title of the season.

“I had a fantastic season on the LPGA, it was nice to finish that off with a second place over there and one last event of the year, hopefully I can finish it off strong. It’s nice to be back in Spain and there were quite a few Irish people out watching today which was nice to have a little home support and my dad is here this week, so it’s nice to have him here too and finish it off as well as I can.”
