Stephanie Meadow endured a wild opening round at the Ascendant LPGA benefitting Volunteers of America to keep herself in the conversation after the first day in Texas.

The Galgorm touring pro carded six birdies around four bogeys and a double-bogey to sign for a level-par 71 at Old American Golf Club, which has her tied for 26th after day one.

Six shots behind leader Xiyu Lin, who kicked things off with a six-under 65, Meadow was never under-par for her round but will be relatively pleased at battled back from being two-over at the turn.

After starting at the 10th, the par-threes on her back nine were the problem as she bogeyed the 11th and then double-bogeyed the 16th, which came in between birdies at the par-four 15th and par-five 17th, and a bogey at the par-four 18th dropped her to two-over.

But she recovered on the front nine, birdieing

Meanwhile, Leona Maguire missed out on making her start in The Colony as a passport mix-up meant she couldn’t get to Texas in time for the start of the tournament.

The Cavan woman had sent her passport away to get it checked so she was eligible to travel to the BMW Ladies Championship at the end of next month, however she did not get it back in time to make the trip Stateside.
