Rory McIlroy is being backed as one of the most likely players to land one of golf’s four major championships next season after he walked off with the $18m winner’s cheque at the FedEx Cup finale in Atlanta.

McIlroy began the Tour Championship six shots adrift of points leader Scottie Scheffler and also started the week with a triple bogey and a bogey at his opening two holes, but a stunning comeback saw him win the tournament by a stroke to be crowned FedEx champion for a record third time.

McIlroy last landed one of golf’s big four at the 2014 USPGA at Valhalla in Kentucky, but he is already shortening in the early betting for the 2023 majors, with the chances of him landing a fifth career major now down to 2/1 from 3/1 with BoyleSports.

His chances of completing a career grand slam at the 2023 Masters have been clipped into 9/1 from 10/1 and he is an even shorter 8/1 favourite to pick up a second Claret Jug at Hoylake next year, the scene of his sole Open triumph in 2014.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said:“With a career grand slam in sight, punters are already eyeing up a green jacket for the FedEx Cup champion and next year’s Open venue holds fond memories for Rory McIlroy too. We had to go 2/1 from 3/1 that he’ll be a major champion next year within hours of his Tour Championship win and the fact he’s now leading the market in all four majors indicates the level of confidence that he’ll be the one to beat next year.”
