Harrington falls just short in back-to-back PGA Tour Champions bid as Stricker wins Ally Challenge

Padraig Harrington came up just shy in his bid to win back-to-back tournaments on the PGA Tour Champions as fellow Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker won The Ally Challenge in Michigan.

The two skippers at Whistling Straits a year ago duelled down the stretch at Warwick Hills Golf Resort, while Jeff Maggert made a late Sunday run at the title, but ultimately USA would prevail over Europe once more.

Stricker would end his tournament with a five-under 67 to claim a one-shot victory over Brett Quigley at 15-under-par, with Maggert’s 65 earning him solo third a shot further back at 13-under.

Harrington, meanwhile, would have to settle for a share of fourth in Grand Blanc, a final round of 70 seeing him finish at 12-under-par alongside overnight leader Scott Dunlap.

It’s disappointment for Harrington, who had been looking to follow last week’s DICK’S Sporting Goods Open triumph with another straightaway, but he continues to thrive on the seniors circuit and takes another step towards the top of the Schwab Cup standings.

On this occasion, he could do little to counter the excellent Stricker, who had a sublime back nine stretch as he bounced back from a bogey at the 12th with four straight birdies to pull clear, with back-to-back pars enough to see him over the line for his second PGA Tour Champions win of the season, and ninth overall.

In contrast, Harrington, who could not have started the day better after eagling the opening hole, never got a run going as he parred the remaining eight holes of his front nine before mixing two birdies with two bogeys on his way back to the clubhouse.
