Good news for the 16 Irish finalists competing in next week’s last round of Open Qualifying with the R&A revealing that four extra spots will be up for grabs to play their way to St Andrews.
Golfers aiming to secure a place in The 150th Open from July 14-17 have seen the number of places available at Final Qualifying increase from a minimum of 12 to 16, meaning that four golfers will now earn a place in golf’s original championship at each of the events being held at Fairmont St Andrews, Hollinwell, Prince’s and St Annes Old Links on Tuesday, 28 June.
The island of Ireland is well represented by; Edmonstown amateur Thomas Abom, Darwin Escapes golfer David Carey, Co. Sligo amateur Thomas Finnegan, Tullamore’s Stuart Grehan, Cork’s John Hickey, West Waterford’s Gary Hurley, Roganstown amateur Séan Keeling, Laytown & Bettystown amateur Alex Maguire, West Cliff’s Brendan McCarroll, Ruaidhri McGee, Ballymena’s Dermot McElroy, Castle amateur Robert Moran, Galway’s Ronan Mullarney, Kinsale’s John Murphy, Douglas amateur Peter O’Keeffe and Limerick’s Tim Rice.

Speaking about the increased opportunity for those teeing up, Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Executive Director – Championships at The R&A, said; “We have flexibility to increase the number of places available at Final Qualifying and have determined that we can offer four at each event this year.
“We already know that there is a strong motivation among golfers to secure a place in the field for The 150th Open at St Andrews and so with more places now on offer for this historic championship, we are looking forward to watching players compete in four exciting events next week.”
Final Qualifying sees golfers compete over 36 holes of stroke play competition at each venue with the leading four golfers earning a place in The 150th Open at St Andrews.
