Tony Finau could become the first signing of Jon Rahm’s new LIV team after it emerged that he is in talks with the Saudi backed tour.
The US Ryder Cup team member is mooted to be weighing up a potential €60 million offer from LIV Golf to join Rahm’s LIV team just days after the Spaniard’s defection from the PGA Tour and DP World Tour for a world record fee.
According to The Telegraph, Rahm has a condition in his contract that allows him to handpick at least one player on his four-man team and Finau looks like he could fit the bill.
Finau, who is competing in the Grant Thornton Invitational team event alongside Nelly Korda on the PGA Tour, was coy on his future when asked about it on Friday.
“No, not yet. I haven’t let anything marinate other than just playing right now. I’m happy for Jon. He made the best decision he felt was right for his family and himself.”
Rahm’s move to LIV during the week was a seismic blow to the PGA Tour with PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan set to meet with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the PIF governor with the December 31 deadline for a merger between the tours edging ever closer.
Monahan’s days appear to be numbered as far as his position in power goes. While he has yet to comment on Rahm’s move, the world number three feels players are losing trust in him.
“There are people that have lost trust and if he stays the commissioner it’s going to take a long time for a lot of these players to trust him, Rahm told the Pat McAfee Show.
“I do believe there are some who still trust him and [think] he’s the great option. But I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
